Your driveway is a fitness studio and it doesn’t know it yet. All it needs is some chalk and a toddler with somewhere to be.

Draw a wandering path down the driveway or sidewalk with chunky toddler-safe chalk — the kind that won’t snap in half the second small hands press down. Add a few simple challenges along the way: circles to jump into, a wiggly line to balance-walk along, a big star for “stop and spin around three times.” That’s the whole course.

The genius of this one is that toddlers don’t actually need you to explain the rules. Draw a circle and a toddler will jump in it without being told to. Draw a line and they’ll try to walk it. The chalk does the instructing for you — you just have to draw the shapes and get out of the way.

Once the basic course gets predictable, here’s where the same chalk turns into a few different games without buying anything else — see “Extend the Play” below.

A note on mess and cleanup: washable, outdoors, and rain (or a hose) erases the whole thing eventually. Nothing to gather up when you’re done — just walk away.

Adapt It (Younger/Older):
For a younger toddler still working on balance, keep the shapes big and simple — large circles to stomp in, a short straight line instead of a wiggly one. For an older toddler nearing preschool, add harder challenges: hop on one foot at the star, walk the line backward, or count out loud with each jump.

Extend the Play:

1. Color rules: Call out a color and have them only step on that color as they move through the course.
2. Animal walk: Assign an animal to each shape (hop like a bunny at the circle, waddle like a duck at the line).
3. Timed lap: See how many times they can run the whole course before a song ends.

Questions to Ask:
"What do you think happens if you jump on one foot instead of two?"

"Can you walk the line without stepping off?"

"What should the next shape be?"
